Hive of Activity for Children This Summer

Arts and crafts, magical story time and creative writing at The Hive will entertain children through the long holidays.

The Hive has packed the summer full of free educational fun on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for preschool children to 11 year olds.

Children aged six to 11 can find out about the history of Worcester through stories and activities from the Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service on Tuesday afternoons.

There are fun events and activities to encourage children to continue reading through the summer with this year’s Reading Agency’s ‘Summer Reading Challenge’ for four to 11 year olds.

This year’s theme is ‘Mythical Maze’ introducing children to the world of legend and mythology and The Hive has created some creative activities to take part in.

Starting on Tuesday 29 July, between 10 and 11.30am two activity sessions will be running in parallel for six to 11-year-olds and under six-year-olds. Each session includes stories followed by fun activities. The first theme is ‘Daring Dragons’ where children can also make stick puppets.

There is also the opportunity to take part in a creative writing workshop with children’s author Roddy Brooks on Thursday 31 July, between 3 and 6pm. The workshop will include a variety of interactive elements such as quizzes, writing sessions and story writing. Places are limited and so pre-booking at The Hive is advised.

Other children’s events at The Hive include Wacky Wednesday sessions which are continuing over the summer for children aged 0 to five. This fun interactive parent and child session is run by Worcester’s Children’s Centre and takes place every Wednesday from 1.30 to 3pm, with story time at 2.30pm.

Older children aged eight to 12-years-old who are avid readers may like to try a taster session for the book club ‘Chatterbox’ on Tuesday 26 August from 4 to 5.15pm. Meetings are held every second Tuesday of the month.

For the grown-ups we have a quarter of a million books to choose from, 12 miles of archives and offers at The Hive café. So you can take some time out from the hectic holidays to relax.
