Volunteers Can Make a Difference

The Hive is gearing up for National Volunteering Week (1 – 7 June) and is ready to recruit new volunteers who can welcome visitors to The Hive, offer support with using computers and the internet and assist at events.

Since The Hive opened in July 2012 it has had over 1.7 million visits, issued almost 2 million books and has an average of 28,000 users logging-in to computers each month.

Janine Downes, Library Services Manager at The Hive, said: “Volunteers already support lots of activity at The Hive, including a very busy Work Club, Beginners Computing Sessions, Children's Bounce and Rhyme sessions, Archive and Archaeology services, delivering books to housebound customers and greeting customer entering the building. They really add value to what we do, and help make the customer's experience an excellent one.

“The Hive is a busy venue and a great place for volunteers to experience working in a unique facility, learn something new and meet new people. Lots of our volunteers go on to work here or in roles elsewhere, while others may be retired and bring the many skills they have gained in the workplace to support our customers."

“As Europe's first integrated university and public library and history centre The Hive offers a wide range of services and currently has a number of roles for volunteers, including Meet and Greet to welcome visitors to this lively building, Digital Champions to help people gain confidence on the internet, and Event Volunteers supporting its wide programme of events, taking tickets on the night.

The Hive doesn’t limit volunteering to adults. Young people aged 13-19 are invited to support The Reading Agency's annual ‘Summer Reading Challenge’ which encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six books based around a theme through the summer holidays. The Hive is busy creating fun events for children, which it will announce later this month, and is recruiting volunteers to give a helping hand.
